Mar 5: Mercury enters Aries
Mar 22: Mercury Retrograde begins
Apr 15: Mercury Retrograde ends
Planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a “backwards” functioning of the planetary roles. Mercury turns retrograde three times a year, more frequently than any other planet. Brain candy from EarthSky:
On Mercury, for example, the Sun sometimes moves in retrograde! As the planet speeds through its closest approach with the sun, its orbital speed overtakes its rotational speed. An astronaut on the surface would see the sun partially rise, then dip back below the horizon, then rise again before resuming its east-to-west trek across the sky. Once a year, Mercury gets two sunrises on the same day!
Mercury is: communication, the mind, travel, expression, technology. These realms are particularly affected during Mercury Retrograde. Expect delays, cancellations and sudden changes to travel/social plans; technological failures, especially cell phones, laptops or automobiles; communication breakdown; disorganization; confusion; impaired decision-making; mysterious disappearances or lost/stolen items; malfunctioning of anything and everything! I do not recommend major purchases or signing important (read: any) contracts/documents. This is not a good time for long-distance travel, life-altering commitments or investments. In a nutshell: *hands off new endeavors.*
Mercury erupts with giggles and joy in Aries. This energy you feel in your spirit is your real home, your true nature. We last experienced Mercury Retrograde in Aries one year ago, from Apr 20 – May 3, 2017. Now Mercury rewinds in Aries once more. He first enters this constellation on Mar 5, and we will begin to feel the effects of the retrograde as early as Mar 8, just three days into the transit. Things should be back to normal by May 3. Mercury will then continue hanging in Aries until May 13.
Retrograde periods focus on that which has been ignored, and here we return to self-love and self-empowerment. This is not poetic love. Mercury Retrograde in Aries is all about simultaneously appreciating and challenging ourselves. Are you burning yourself in fires of rage? The ram has a vise-like grip on ego. As soon as Mercury moves into Taurus, the ego relaxes, you’ll see. Until then, we must overcome egotistical impulses and deflate vulgar inner voices. Turn lovingly toward the rudest of them all. Take this wounded inner child, hold him in your arms.
Mercury Retrograde in Aries will test our ability to remain calm. Why must we stay calm? Aries has a sharp tongue and spouts off in moments of anger, so it is wise to speak less and do more. The magic of Aries is unlocked only by moving and sweating – and thereby getting in touch with our most authentic selves. Aries is not community-oriented, to say the least. The ram is pointed, staccato. With so much inside him, constantly imploding, not everything can or will be communicated properly.
Aries rises to his full height with merciless eyes, bringing physical and sexual energy, and a loosening of the tongue, a freeing of the mind, an awakening. Burnish yourself anew, crisp as a blood red crocus.
Two dates worth mentioning before the retrograde starts: on Mar 10, Mercury squares Saturn in Capricorn – not such a great day, especially where communication and professional life overlap. This aspect will appear once more on Apr 5. On Mar 19, the day before Aries season starts, Mercury will be conjunct Venus – this should be an excellent day! The next gold star day is Apr 1, when Mercury will be conjunct the Sun. Apr 4 will be another challenging day, with Mercury first squaring Mars, then again squaring Saturn in Capricorn on Apr 5.
