To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as “backwards” functioning of the planets and their respective roles. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

As the word retrograde implies, it’s time to go back, to finish, review, redo. Venus Retrograde started in Virgo a few days ago, but now she backtracks into Leo. When Venus is retrograde, it is not advisable to make major changes to your home or personal appearance, as these aspects of life are ruled by the Goddess of Love. According to CafeAstrology, when Venus is Retrograde “…we don’t seem to be in touch with exactly what and who we value, or, some might say we are seeing things more or too clearly.”

Venus Retrograde in Leo

Venus transited Leo the first week of June until just over a week ago - so we’re back for round 2. Let’s wax poetic on the nature of Venus Retrograde in this fixed fire sign. Venus wants us to be happy and comfortable, especially in our relationships with others. The retrograde period puts tremendous strain on friendships and partnerships. Venus Rx in Leo emphasizes the Self above all else. This theme is a holdover from Venus Rx in Virgo, although it manifests differently here. Venus Retrograde in Virgo draws us back to the Self in a way that feels uncomfortable yet cathartic. Virgo doesn’t always appreciate herself as she feels guilty when she is not at the service of others, so Venus Rx in Virgo asks us to cultivate loyalty to our own code, to treat the Self with the same care, diligence and precision so thoughtfully and dutifully exercised with others.

With Venus Rx in Leo, the heart stands tall. It’s time to rework our relationship to the Self in a way that is both honest and loving. At times you may crave love and attention from others, but this is only because you will be eager to share newfound affection and devotion. Spreading warmth and joy is a way for others to see and acknowledge how hard Leo has been working on becoming a better person. The lion loves nothing more than to feel needed. In actuality, Venus Retrograde in Leo clings fiercely to love in order to free the Self from the ego’s vice grip: liberation through the trials and triumphs of the heart. We also see this contradiction in the fact that Leos love to be right, but only because it allows them to better help others.

However! From CafeAstrology:

Affection is difficult to express in a natural or spontaneous manner. We might find others are lacking in sincerity or genuineness in their expressions of social niceties. (We may be inclined to do the same!) … It’s hard to trust others just now, and, perhaps more so, it’s difficult to trust our own instincts … People might appear to be more selfish, withdrawn, and self-protective.

The ego joins the table

Venus now encourages us to be firm in our sense of Self and deal with conflict head-on. Venus Retrograde in Leo invites the ego for dinner but then never asks him to leave. Venus in Leo lives fearlessly from the heart, often saying things in the heat of the moment that may be perfectly true but perhaps not so pretty on the ears. When taken to the extreme, Venus in Leo creates drama just for the sake of making life interesting. Leonine fixed energy is forcefully expansive and needs somewhere to go! If caught in a weak moment of boredom or stagnation, we may overstate reality to create momentary excitement, respite from the humdrum. Another possibility is over-indulgence: spending too much money, going out excessively etc.

This transit provides opportunities to finally say everything that has been slowly ripening within. Venus Retrograde often marks the end of significant relationships - not because incidents occur, but because we have enough confidence at last to speak up. For those who are especially sensitive to Venusian energy, this aspect will be more prominent. Almost every time that Venus Retrograde occurs, a relationship ends in my life! It is very important to surrender to the impulse to communicate when it arises. This urge indicates that a window of divine timing has opened. From CafeAstrology:

When breakups do occur in the second half of a Venus retrograde cycle, I have noticed they are imperfect. They are not often clean breaks. Couples and friends may reunite later or if they stay broken up, they might often wonder if it was the right thing to do - something is often left hanging. Venus retrograde is a period for clearing the decks and dealing with the past so as to move forward fresh and re-energized …

Venus Retrograde wants to feel at home, both physically and psychologically; you may move to a new residence or question whether you’re in the “right place.” Venus Retrograde gets us “in touch with our deeper, less obvious, and less superficial needs and wants.” (Cafe Astrology) This vibration lends itself nicely to the feeling of “all things fated” that seems unique to Venus Retrograde. Venus in Leo is usually a very social time, but planning major social engagements is not advised now. This is probably fortuitous because Venus in Leo has a tendency to talk more, especially about the self, and listen less.

Many of you were born when Venus was retrograde. Those with this disposition may not feel the effects of this period as much, if at all. To find your Venus sign and whether she was direct or retrograde at the time of your birth, click here.

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Ruler of fixed air sign and notorious rebel Aquarius, Uranus is all about freedom. He defies tradition and embraces uniqueness. Uranian energy is innovative, original and progressive. Areas of life associated with this planet are electricity, technology, enlightenment, objectivity, ingenuity, investigation and discovery. When balanced, Uranian energy is the spark that illuminates curiosity, propelling us to ask questions and explore ardently. Imbalanced Uranian energy makes us reckless, restless, extreme, forceful, overreactive or irresponsible. Uranus loves nothing more than to make waves, disrupting the agenda of The Man.

Uranus Retrograde

Uranus has occupied cardinal fire sign Aries since May 2010 and will be here until March 2019. Uranus is actually retrograde about half the time. What does this mean? When Uranus turns retrograde, we are asked to examine our spontaneity and authenticity. As with Saturn retrograde, we confront fears and blocks. The difference here is that revelations happen suddenly. Priorities and values quickly make themselves clear. Problems present themselves immediately and aggressively, making them impossible to ignore. All who are balanced attain new levels of conscious awareness.

We are now entering a deep labyrinth of mental probing and analysis. Uranus retrograde asks: what have you blindly accepted? Prepare for an abrupt change in direction if one is needed! This transit always pushes me out of jobs, relationships, perspectives and behaviors that have successfully trapped me in a state of unawareness. Some, myself included, are able to feel shift happening but can’t seem to harness the energy, so you may spend a lot of time processing said changes without immediately acting upon them. On that note, it is not uncommon to feel lost or anxious during Uranus Rx transits. You may experience personality changes during this time. Every retrograde period lifts a veil. What we see underneath is not always what we desire, but this is often because we have gotten too comfortable. The path that you brought you to the present moment will be fully illuminated.

Uranus in Aries

On a broader scale, Uranus retrograde manifests as general unrest in society. Truths that have been covered up, suppressed or ignored will all be unearthed as Uranus continues his transit of ferocious Aries. Conventions and traditions are challenged, and change follows suit. You don’t have to look far to see how global transformations and struggles for freedom are growing exponentially. Political systems are faced with demands for overhaul like we’ve never seen before. This is a result of Aries fire igniting Uranus’ unorthodox, groundbreaking energy. Whatever we’ve been doing up until now is obviously not working. The ram, being the first sign in the zodiac, demands a return to square one. All that has been hidden now resurfaces. Corruption, scandal and hypocrisy are dinosaurs wheezing their last breaths.

With Uranus turning retrograde, the inner rebel steps down for reflection. We are passive and pensive, resting inside a cocoon in preparation for when Uranus turns direct again, a time when we will burst forth to express our true, uninhibited Self. Some interpretations of Uranus state that we feel more rebellious during retrograde periods, but I disagree. Uranus Retrograde gives us better access to our intuition and instincts; when Uranus turns direct, we boldly apply new inner wisdom in the external world and make necessary changes, even risky ones.

Those born with Uranus retrograde always need to know why, why, why? There is a tendency here to control the inner rebel until it all comes out at once, seemingly from nowhere. Uranus retrograde in the natal chart points to a need for internal change before external manifestation. The power of the inner rebel is underestimated.

I was born when Uranus was retrograde. Those with this disposition may not feel the effects of this period as much, if at all. As the word “retrograde” implies, it’s time to go back, to finish, review, redo. Venus turns retrograde about once every 18 months for 6 weeks. When Venus is retrograde, it is not advisable to make major changes to your home or personal appearance, as these aspects of life are ruled by the Goddess of Love. Venus indicates our tastes and pleasures - value comes to mind. She wants us to be happy and comfortable, especially in our relationships with others. Venus Retrograde therefore puts tremendous strain on our friendships and partnerships.

Venus Retrograde in Virgo

We’ve discussed Venus entering Virgo as of July 18. Let’s wax poetic on the nature of Venus Retrograde in this mutable earth sign. As ruler of fixed earth sign Taurus, Venus demonstrates her need for security and sensuality. In cardinal air sign Libra, Venus reveals her love for harmony, beauty and balance. And in Virgo? Her role in the grand harvest. The Virgo cycle coincides with autumn in the northern hemisphere. From the Alchemical Journey:

[T]he crop must be cut down in its prime, harvested and its essence extracted … We experience Virgo whenever we are examined, judged, cut down to size, as wheat is sorted from chaff … The harvest goddess shapes and moulds our spontaneous impulses into practical, useful, sustainable projects that serve the greater good. She strips away our indulgences, hones our creative instincts and transforms our promises into everyday miracles, like golden wheat being turned into the food that nourishes a community.

I love this interpretation of the virgin as it’s one that we certainly don’t see very often in the astrology world. More from the Alchemical Journey:

…beyond the popular image of an innocent virgin, secretary or nit-picker, lies an experienced mistress of purification, discernment, and sexual control.

Let’s build our dialog around this powerful image: regaining bodily sovereignty. Our intention now is to get life in order, to purge that which is useless.

In yoga and other similar disciplines, enormous emphasis is placed on day-to-day observances such as cleaning and maintenance. What is the connection between the mundane and the extraordinary? The rote work entailed in any practice such as yoga demonstrates that spiritual insight cannot issue forth if proper arrangements have not been made beforehand on the terrestrial plane. The Alchemical Journey on this subject:

Through bringing mindfulness to our repetitive actions, honouring time, work and our body’s rhythms, we actually open up the possibility of transcending those ritual structures, and entering a liminal space between worlds where transformation can occur.

Virgo lives in the yamas and niyamas of yoga: the ethical principles. One of these is known as saucha or cleanliness. After each practice, the devoted yogi returns every prop and device to its rightful place; mats are cleaned; floors are swept. These simple yet fundamental acts prepare us to see our bodies and the spaces which they inhabit as one and the same, to be treated with equal love and respect. You would be hard-pressed to find a yogi, shaman or mystic who does not have an unwavering daily regimen. We slow now to ask: do my actions serve a greater purpose? Venus Rx in Virgo demands pragmatism and organization, but these are mere means to an end. We surrender to particular methods only so that we may understand their connection to those planes and dimensions in which there is no separation between body, spirit, time or space.

Virgo is the sign of the virgin, but this archetype seems to have taken on different connotations over time. Last quote from the Alchemical Journey:

She is a virgin in its older meaning, certainly, as one who owns her own body and chooses when and with whom to unite!

Venus Rx in Virgo asks us to give love simply by being available: perceptive, attentive. As much as Venus concerns herself with interpersonal relationships, the retrograde period draws us back to the Self. Virgo doesn’t like to see herself in the mirror. She feels guilty when she is not at the service of others. Let’s turn this highly receptive energy inward. Venus Rx in Virgo asks us to cultivate loyalty to our own code, to treat the Self with the same care, diligence and precision so thoughtfully and dutifully exercised with others. Venus Rx in Virgo requires dedication!

Venus Rx in Virgo is not the best time for new love or financial endeavors. She demonstrates that nothing is worth having if we do not feel at home within. I visualize Venus Rx in Virgo polishing the soul’s diamond until it gleams brightly from every facet. What needs dusting? Our first inclination may be to shy away from that which is actually a healing force. Let’s face and define blocks with the knowledge that, in so doing, we effectively dissolve their power. Indeed, to know the problem is to know the solution.

Venus is quite at home in Virgo, as she is accustomed to earth energy. I expect that we’ll find a groove quickly and with satisfaction. Nothing to fear :)

In classic astrology, Saturn rules earthbound Capricorn, but he’s been transiting fiery Sagittarius since December 2014. Saturn in Sagittarius embodies quite the contradiction: Saturn is all about contraction, Sagittarius expansion. Sagittarius stretches us beyond what we believe possible, while Saturn mandates that everything be traditional, concise and orderly. Saturn in Sagittarius grows rapidly, yet still within a framework: structured and disciplined evolution. Sagittarius rules truth, morality and honor. Saturn in this placement seeks philosophies that uplift and empower. Sagittarius is a free thinker, but this is not how I would describe Saturn. Saturn will not indulge the centaur’s propensity for irresponsibility or recklessness.

Saturn in Scorpio

For the last three months, Saturn has been spinning retrograde in Sagittarius, but now we’re dialing all the way back into water-loving Scorpio. Before last winter, Saturn had been hanging out in Scorpio since October 2012. The themes we are about to encounter are therefore already very familiar to all of us on a personal level. Saturn in Scorpio: a time of intense scrutiny. Both Saturn and Scorpio energies can be suspicious and manipulative when imbalanced. Combined, these energies direct our attention towards issues of power. Saturn in Scorpio reveals what makes us feel vulnerable, especially in relation to our dependencies. It is perfectly normal and natural to have dependencies, but now is the time to cut ties with people, support systems and addictions that no longer serve us. Although it is unpleasant, this process will leave us feeling even more empowered and purposeful than before.

While Saturn claws at our most hidden, visceral insecurities, Scorpio desperately attempts to cover them up. Saturn in Scorpio examines intimacy. We have more demands and expectations for others. Any and all illusions are exposed, giving us total insight into the true nature of our relationships. Saturn in Scorpio urges us to share our souls without fear of rejection, but this very thing is the most excruciating. Like a scorpion lying flat between a rock and the earth, we reach blindly for total contact, and in the process come ever closer to the Self. There is an inherent conflict here between control and faith. Ideally we come to realize that we are master of the Self and nothing else - the Self entirely controls and creates reality. How much energy are we expending trying to change that which we cannot? Do we cling to blame and grudges? Where can we be more forgiving? Issues surrounding debt – either material or emotional – may figure prominently in this transit.

Saturn Retrograde

For about 4.5 months out of the year, Saturn is retrograde. Saturn Rx asks us to review and accept our “failures” – but are they really? The Buddha decried that there is no failure, only lessons learned. If you have been working with sincerity radiating from your heart and soul, karma will reward you handsomely now. Saturn delivers his gifts of abundance even if we do “fail.” As with everything in life, intention rules supreme. Acting insincerely permits Saturn Rx to unleash the full glory of his consequences. Whether you’ve been slacking or not, this transit is really just one long test of endurance. Progress must be examined with utmost realism. Saturn Rx wants to know: what are you truly capable of?

Peering into the heart and gut to see all that hurts, all that we’ve lost and all that makes us less than happy is our task now. Saturn Rx in Scorpio asks us to confront our pain so that we can begin healing. It’s time to delve into the subconscious to see which patterns dictate our lives. Before we can conquer these vicious cycles, we must face them head-on. This transit demands that we feel everything at the deepest level before we are allowed to move forward. If you attempt to rush this process, you will be presented with even more challenges. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, we can and will transform. This is a critical period in which we reclaim personal accountability – only YOU can make yourself happy!

Slow and steady

Saturn moves slowly and deliberately. He demonstrates that nothing is worth having if it is does not take time and work. I visualize Saturn Rx in Scorpio reaching down into the dark profundity of the psyche to overturn blackened rocks and logs. What’s underneath? Our first inclination may be to shy away from that which is actually a healing force. Let’s face and define spiritual blocks with the knowledge that, in so doing, we effectively dissolve the power of lingering fear, hesitation and mistrust. Indeed, to know the problem is to know the solution. If balanced, you will find meaning even in mystery and confusion.

Saturn teaches that change is necessary to move forward. Nothing about this planet is quick, easy or direct. We will be pushed, not led. Saturn Rx in Scorpio renders definitive endings and beginnings that help us grow and mature. The source of bad habits, compulsions, debts and addictions are revealed so that whatever is truly missing – whatever led to a state of imbalance in the first place – can be illuminated. Life might get messy as we turn to that which we have suppressed. Think of this transit as an expedition into a deep, dark cave: you only want to do it once, so do it well! Expect some fuzziness concerning long-term goals, plans and responsibilities.

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In classic astrology, Neptune rules mutable water Pisces, the last sign in the zodiac realm. Just as Pisces represents endings and return to Source, Neptune rules ego-death, spiritual sacrifice and enlightenment. Neptune is the dreamer, the psychic, the medium: the dissolution of many into One. She is master of imaginative thought and boundless creativity. Neptune’s lessons ask us to confront our relationship to vices and addictions which offer a dreamlike sense of reality.

Neptune in Pisces: mass spiritual awakening

Since April 2011, Neptune has been transiting through Pisces, the sign she rules. When a planet returns to its ruling sign, we say in astrology that it is “at home.” Whenever a planet occupies the sign it rules, the energy of the planet is more visible and obvious in everyday life. With Neptune at home, we are poised for transformation on a global scale. On the other hand, it is possible for this to manifest as a massive existential crisis. As individuals, we all have a choice to make. Are you avoiding your own spiritual path, allowing fear to predominate? Navigating the murky territory of our higher Self is difficult and intense, no doubt, but Neptune is here to guide you.

We have the power to liberate the Self from waking reality and evolve beyond this terrestrial plane. Imagine a membrane between each dimension and each parallel reality growing thinner by the day. Many trends in popular culture reflect Neptune’s current placement: rapid legalization of medical/recreational marijuana; yoga and transcendental meditation skyrocketing in the West; extra-terrestrial themes in music and pop culture; simulators and next-level gaming that blur the lines between physical and virtual reality, just to name a few.

Empower the divine feminine

We are also encouraged now to examine the great imbalance between masculine and feminine energy on our planet. I am confident that by the end of Neptune’s current spin through Pisces, we will have returned to ancient wisdom as a way to protect the Earth and empower her people. Neptune aspires to universal love and compassion for all beings. Ever since Neptune returned home to Pisces in 2011, my intuition, empathy and psychic awareness have grown exponentially more powerful.

A major lesson of Neptune is understanding that our vices do not elevate us to a higher consciousness. Many fall down the well of addiction and escapist behavior in an effort to gain greater soul awareness, whether or not this is the conscious goal. This reminds me of Coleman Bark’s introduction to a collection of poems about taverns by 13th century Turkish poet Jelaluddin Rumi:

The grapeskin of ego breaks and a pouring begins. Fermentation is one of the oldest symbols for human transformation. When grapes combine their juice and are closed up together for a time in a dark place, the results are spectacular. This is what lets two drunks meet so that they don’t know who is who. Pronouns no longer apply in the tavern’s mud-world of excited confusion and half-articulated wantings. But after some time in the tavern, a point comes, a memory of elsewhere, a longing for the source, and the drunks must set off from the tavern and return … The tavern is a kind of glorious hell that human beings enjoy and suffer and then push off from in search for truth … A breaking apart, a crying out in the street, begins in the tavern, and the human soul turns to find its way home. (The Essential Rumi, p. 1)

It is more important now than ever to ground in a spiritual practice. Chances are, you already have one. Anything you do on a daily basis that makes you feel whole and happy is a spiritual practice, such as having a cup of coffee and reading a book every morning.

Neptune Rx: what to expect?

Neptune is retrograde about 5 months out of the year. This is an introspective and reflective period in which we are likely to encounter delays in our own transformational journey. Just because the rate of shift will temporarily slow doesn’t mean that these changes will lose intensity. In fact, you can expect quite the opposite. When retrograde, Neptune’s purpose is to clear out internal blockages that hinder our personal journey. Change happens more within than externally. When Neptune is direct, she operates in the public sphere on a global level. However, Neptune Rx gets us in touch with our own personal shadows.

When retrograde, Neptune becomes even more Neptunian. During Neptune Rx periods, our sensitivity increases such that we are able to see and feel much more than usual. It is easy during this time to become overwhelmed by our surroundings. Neptune Retrograde blurs the lines until they practically vanish, making it quite challenging for us to effectively resist outside influences. However, this is actually a blessing in disguise. We learn during this period how to exercise better self-control and self-discipline and also how to confront issues that we have been avoiding deep within the psyche. During this time it is not uncommon for psychic abilities to kick up a notch. In all ways, we are more in touch with the right brain, the divine feminine. This is a very powerful time to heal and cultivate self-compassion. Give a listen to Neptune, the Mystic from The Planets Suite by Gustav Holst.

On the night of Monday, June 8, the moon will pass over Neptune in Pisces in what is known as a “conjunction” in astrology. I suggest a ritual with water or some Pisces Yoga.

Mercury Rx in Gemini ♊ May 18 - June 11

Mercury will station retrograde in Gemini from May 18 - June 11

Click here to learn about Mercury.

We’ve discussed Mercury stationing retrograde starting May 18 and Mercury entering Gemini as of April 30. Let’s combine topics and wax poetic on the nature of Mercury Retrograde in this insatiable mutable air sign. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

As the word “retrograde” implies, this is a time when we go back to finish, review and redo. You may recall that the last Mercury Rx transit fell in Aquarius, the air sign following Gemini and Libra. After a stint in Gemini, this year’s next and final Mercury Rx will indeed fall in Libra, the other remaining air sign. This is how Mercury Retrograde moves through the zodiac realm, year after year. 2015 is the Mercury Rx year of the air element. Mercury Rx in Aquarius shined a light on our own organic brilliance and inner wisdom. What abundance will we receive from Mercury Rx in Gemini? With Mercury in Gemini, we return to areas of life connected to our social circle and intellectual pursuits. Unlike Aquarius, Gemini is a mutable sign, meaning that this period will appear to move more quickly and sporadically than the last.

Now is the time to break out of relationships/partnerships that have calcified over time and no longer serve you. Gemini is the sign of duality and twins. In particular, you may now focus on sibling relationships. This transit will also help you attain a new level of knowledge and creativity, especially in fields such as writing or everyday technology. Mercury Rx in Gemini presents an opportunity to harness the magic of communication and brainpower. At its core, Mercury Rx is all about change and there is simply no escaping! I like to think of Mercury in Gemini as a return to square one: hitting the reset button, returning to home base. This is actually a very auspicious placement for Mercury, as he rules Gemini; in astrology we say that this retrograde transit occurs “at home.” Keeping this in mind, have faith that the inevitable changes now hurtling at you full speed are ultimately there to help and center you.

Visualize a sharp and cunning wind blowing through your life, rearranging and readjusting all that needs attention. Mercury Rx in Gemini is vibrant and animated yet undeniably overwhelming. Gemini epitomizes the true essence of mercurial/mutable energy. If you resist becoming that which you already are, I expect that this transit will be difficult for you. All of the projects, goals and ideas dancing in your psyche are just waiting to burst forth in an explosion of color and heat. Holding a lid on all this mutable energy is like trying to direct the wind: futile and exhausting.

If I’m being honest, I’m slightly nervous about the potency of this transit, only because I have come to more fully understand the way in which the twins move in tight, concentric circles, never straying too far from the familiar. Gemini can be so detail-oriented that the big picture might get overlooked. To determine your Mercury sign and whether he was direct or retrograde at the time of your birth, click here. It is interesting to note that, if you were indeed born with Mercury Rx, you may not notice the effects above as strongly, if at all.

Mercury Retrograde ☿ May 18 - June 11

Mercury turns retrograde in Gemini from May 18, 2015 - June 11

Click here to learn about Mercury. Click here to learn about Gemini.

About a month ago, I posted about Pluto turning retrograde. Click here to learn about retrograde motion. Mercury turns retrograde 3-4 times a year, more frequently than any other planet. Cool tidbit from EarthSky:

On Mercury, for example, the Sun sometimes moves in retrograde! As the planet speeds through its closest approach with the sun, its orbital speed overtakes its rotational speed. An astronaut on the surface would see the sun partially rise, then dip back below the horizon, then rise again before resuming its east-to-west trek across the sky. Once a year, Mercury gets two sunrises on the same day!

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a sort of “backwards” functioning of the planets and their roles. Mercury is concerned with communication and mental activity. Mercury aptly typifies the human mind: never static – constantly processing – always moving above and beyond, on to the next stimulus. Areas associated with this planet: travel, transportation, negotiation, bargaining, personal expression, technology and writing. When Mercury is retrograde, these realms are particularly affected.

Significant changes begin cropping up about 10 days before, at the dawn of what is known as the “shadow period” (starting this Friday, May 8). Think of it as a trial run, an opportunity to gauge what’s ahead. I have a feeling this Rx period will be more vicious than the last, but it’s too soon to say for sure. On the bright side, we will now go back and finish that which has been forgotten or ignored. I always get lots of great work done during this period :) Be on the lookout for: delays, cancellations/sudden changes to travel or social plans; technological failures, especially with cell phones, laptops or anything Internet-related; communication breakdowns; objects mysteriously disappearing or getting lost/stolen; a creeping feeling that nothing is going right no matter how hard you try; everything seemingly breaking, quitting, falling apart or malfunctioning for no apparent reason! Like many fellow astrologers, sometimes I find myself unnecessarily fearing or over-dramatizing Mercury Rx. With the power of the mind, we can and will have a successful transit. From astrologer Molly Hall:

I’ve come to see the expectation of mishaps as a meme that feeds on itself. That being said, I’ve had some wildly “as above, so below” Mercury retro experiences over the years. Like finding a water-soaked missing book on my neighbor’s porch, after Mercury came out of direct shadow in Pisces.

HOWEVER! I do not recommend making major purchases or signing significant (read: any) contracts/documents during this time. This is NOT – repeat NOT – a good time to make life-altering commitments or invest in major entities such as houses, cars or expensive vacations. Be extremely careful with both your words and your money. Despite all of the confusion and impaired decision-making, I see this transit as a lovely reminder of what’s good in life. Sometimes we need things to go wrong in order to see where we’ve become disorganized. Expect to do a lot of reflecting and/or journaling at this time– it may be difficult to express to others how and what you’re feeling, so it helps to have another outlet for your thoughts. Be compassionate and gentle with yourself and remember that we don’t have to make sense of everything right now. Keywords are review and adjust.

Meditation is strongly suggested, or at the very least some silent time set aside to look back on old work/plans that need attention. As stated, this is generally a very unfavorable time to start new projects for two reasons: it is quite possible that you will completely change your mind when Mercury turns direct again, even if you feel very strongly about something now; additionally, whatever you say or do now carries more weight than normal, so missteps will cost you greatly. Be aware and take precautions. Having said this, there is no need to suspend work or projects that are already in progress. What I’m speaking to now only applies to new endeavors.

One more silver lining, from CafeAstrology:

Minor breaks in the mechanical aspects of communication can actually re-connect us to other means of communication, such as when there is an unexpected power outage and we’re forced off the computer and television, finding different and often satisfying ways to entertain ourselves.

Pluto retrograde in Capricorn ♑ Apr 16, 2015

Pluto turns retrograde in Capricorn from April 16 - September 25

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as “backwards” functioning of the planets and their respective roles. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

In classic astrology, Pluto rules fixed water Scorpio. Pluto concerns himself with issues of transformation and rebirth, fear, trust, integrity, destruction, power and control. When we make life-altering decisions, Plutonian energy is present. Pluto represents shift. It is through Pluto that the psyche is symbolically demolished and renewed.

God of the Underworld

Since November 2008, Pluto has been spinning through cardinal earth Capricorn. This transit has so far been, and will only continue to be, extremely potent. Capricorn is the patriarch of the zodiac, ruler of all things structural, institutional and societal. Pluto in Capricorn manifests as a total overhaul of how we live together on Earth. In particular, we can expect to see continued changes in regards to the global economy, governmental institutions and major religions. Pluto in Capricorn exposes rampant hypocrisy, corruption and greed embedded in the framework of our failing systems. Indeed it is undeniable that we must make fundamental changes at the planetary level if we ever want to live in peace and abundance.

The ultimate goal of Pluto in Capricorn is to reorganize society so that we may live in true harmony with the natural cycles of our planet and the greater Universe. Pluto uses extremes in order to highlight the problems that arise when we put blind trust in institutions. The mainstream media reports so regularly on heretofore hidden, quasi-governmental scandals that I daresay we have become desensitized. Pluto in Capricorn: authoritative and hierarchical, though he’s proudly poised, ready at any moment to initiate the fall of the mighty. This dynamic placement delivers reform by shedding light on truths that have long been suppressed, such as the lies of wealthy men clinging to their power - those who were once viewed as mentors and leaders. On that note, we are also encouraged now to examine the great imbalance between masculine and feminine energy on our planet. I am confident that by the end of this transit, we will return to ancient wisdom as a way to protect the Earth and empower her people.

Pluto Rx: what to expect?

Pluto is retrograde about 6 months out of the year. This is an introspective and reflective period in which we are likely to encounter delays in our own transformational journey. Just because the rate of shift will temporarily slow doesn’t mean that these changes will lose intensity. In fact, you can expect quite the opposite. Pluto is ultimately an evolutionary force; when retrograde, his purpose is to clear out blockages that hinder our personal metamorphosis. Change happens more within than externally. When Pluto is direct, he unearths stories in the public sphere, such as political corruption. However, Pluto Rx gets us in touch with our own personal shadows.

Pluto Rx in Capricorn operates at a physical level. Now is the time to (perhaps literally) remodel, reconfigure and restructure. Reworking allows us to heal. Healing allows us to be reborn. This process should not be taken lightly. From astrologer Nadia Gilchrist:

Pluto’s changes will become obvious to everyone (at some point) so make sure you’re doing them right. The consequences of a poorly handled Pluto transit (ignoring or denying the transformations) can manifest as the ruins of your current structures, with nothing to replace them. Scorched earth, no new growth.

This transit immerses us in the underworld of the psyche. Pluto lives and works here, extracting deep grief and fear embedded in the energy body and unconscious memories. Although he is extreme as an entity himself, Pluto is actually here to purge extremes from our own life. To expedite this purge, release and surrender. One more from Nadia Gilchrist:

Working with a Pluto transit just means you have to let go of what’s already being pulled away and allow new growth to flourish. Then tend to that new growth. This retrograde is your chance to be thorough; you’re working with the changes that have already occurred, not making new ones (yet).

Plutonian endings and beginnings are a result of spiritual growth. This planet asks us to understand our true purpose. Nothing slips by Pluto; he is neither superficial nor simple. Plutonian missions are notoriously complex, dark and intimidating. There will be no growth, improvement or maturation until we see the Self as it is, flaws and all. To achieve this, we must have unconditional trust in the karmic process and the Self. Are you unconsciously giving power to entities which do not serve you? Examine your role in your own evolution.

I was born with Pluto retrograde. Those with this disposition may not feel the effects of this period as much, if at all. To find out your Pluto sign and whether he was direct or retrograde at the time of your birth, click here.

Saturn Rx in Sagittarius ♄ Mar 14 - June 14

To be very clear, planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. In classic astrology, Saturn rules cardinal earth Capricorn. Saturn is the father who governs authoritatively: strict, sometimes harsh but always well-intentioned. It’s a tough-love kind of deal. Saturn forces us to learn the hard way. His lessons are necessary, but not necessarily enjoyable as they concern the inevitable. Saturn’s teachings are the catalysts of our evolution. Saturnian energy will not leave you alone until you have come to truly understand the depths of life. There is no room here for complacency or superficiality.

Since December 2014, Saturn has been spinning through mutable fire Sagittarius. This duo embodies quite the contradiction. Saturn is all about contraction, Sagittarius expansion. Sagittarius demands that we stretch ourselves beyond what we believe possible, while Saturn mandates that everything be done in the most traditional, concise and orderly manner feasible. How to explore new horizons with a sense of adventure and curiosity when there’s a voice booming rules and directions in your ear? Saturn in Sagittarius demands that we grow rapidly, yet still within a framework: structured and disciplined evolution.

Sagittarius rules truth, morality and honor. This is where Saturn directs his iron first now: are you living in accordance with your personal code? We seek wisdom and experiences which connect us to something greater than the Self. We are on a quest now to learn about anything and everything. However, we must move with caution. Saturn will not indulge the centaur’s propensity for irresponsibility or recklessness. We feel a constant need now for heightened awareness but will not be allowed to lose touch with reality. One way we can satisfy all parties is by picking up skills/trades in a certifiable setting. This is the perfect time to go (back) to school or receive training in a new vocational direction. Mind expansion through learning pleases the archer and the regulated, officious environment of a school/apprenticeship gratifies Saturn. Expect mentors to begin entering your life; this is the natural result of Saturn the Patriarch teaming up with Sagittarius the Just.

Coming into alignment with philosophies that uplift and empower is the goal now. This may indicate a keen/renewed/sudden interest in spiritual teachings. Sagittarius is a free thinker, but this is definitely not how I would describe Saturn. Best case scenario, we begin to find freedom in our responsibilities. Consider the following: we really do have more freedom when we attend to our responsibilities. Getting all of our work done right away - no excuses, no procrastination, no exceptions, no delays - means more time to be, to live, to run around!

For about 4.5 months out of the year, Saturn is retrograde. Saturn Rx asks us to review and accept our “failures” - but are they really? The Buddha decried that there is no such thing as failure, only lessons learned. If you have been working with sincerity radiating from your heart and soul, karma will reward you handsomely now. Saturn delivers his gifts of abundance even if we do “fail.” As with everything in life, it is only the intention that really matters. I frequently remind my yoga students of this basic yet profoundly elusive principle: it doesn’t matter how well you do anything, what it looks like, who sees it, what it means to the rest of society - none of that. It only matters that you do it. Even better if you can keep an open heart and mind, but that’s not even truly necessary. Otherwise, Saturn Rx thrusts upon us the consequences of inaction. Whether you’ve been slacking or not, this transit often manifests as one long test of our endurance. Progress must be examined with utmost realism. Saturn wants to know: what are you really capable of? How far can you be pushed before frustration sets in? In a few months, let’s walk away with a new level of self-respect.

So - Saturn Rx in Sagittarius looks like what exactly? The time has come to review/redo/revamp/revitalize our beliefs and morals. I’ve personally been feeling immense pressure since December to rid myself of complexes and live, fully and honestly, by my own personal code of honor. If Saturn in Sagittarius has in any way resembled a leisurely meandering journey up until this point, expect that to change now. I predict that this transit will place us in some grueling circumstances where we must discern very carefully what we deem right and wrong. Saturn moves slowly and deliberately. He demonstrates that nothing is worth having if it is does not take time and work. Saturn now reaches up to the crown chakra with a magnifying glass to examine our perceived altruism, willingness to learn and potential to expand, to become something greater than the Self. What do we find floating up there? We must face and define our spiritual blocks with the knowledge that, in so doing, we effectively dissolve the power of lingering fear, hesitation and mistrust. Indeed, to know the problem is to know the solution.

Saturn teaches that change is necessary to move forward. All things must come to an end. Nothing about Saturn is quick, easy or direct. Although I do not expect this transit to be particularly emotional, I do see the potential for new relationships and events which force us to thoroughly examine what and how we know what we think we know. Saturn Rx in Sagittarius is like being on a spaceship gliding through the stars when you notice that the engine light is blinking red. Panic sets in as you begin to calculate just how far you really are from Earth. You’re pretty sure you might collapse just from the stress of envisioning your inevitable death stranded here among the asteroids. This is where Saturn’s voice harmonizes with the drumming and dancing archer. Focus. Resolve the situation with the power of the intellect and a dash of imagination. Your heart is still beating so loudly that you think it might burst. But then tears well in your eyes - I’m alive! Holy shit! In this moment, total clarity. All of your most deeply held convictions effortlessly rise to the fore of Awareness: this is what is most important to me, this is who I want to be, these are the beliefs that keep me going.

Expect some fuzziness concerning long-term goals, plans and responsibilities. Incorporating new limitations and systems into our lives may prove especially difficult now. We must completely surrender - no ego! - to see how these restrictions actually operate as gifts. Fear not, you will feel cleansed and joyously empty, ready to rebuild. But don’t fool yourself into believing you’ll get let off the hook without doing any work!

Mercury Rx in Aquarius ^___^ Jan 21 - Feb 11

Mercury will station retrograde in Aquarius from January 21, 2015 - February 11

Click here to learn about Mercury.

So we’ve talked about Mercury stationing retrograde starting January 21 and Mercury entering fixed air Aquarius as of January 4. Let’s combine the two and discuss the nature of Mercury Retrograde in this dynamic sign. Click here to learn more about retrograde motion.

As the word “retrograde” implies, this is a time when we go back to finish, review and redo. With Mercury in Aquarius, we return to areas of life connected to our social circle and big plans for the future. If we are balanced, this process should more fully align us with our ideals. The only real danger with this transit is in acting or speaking too forcefully. As a fixed sign, the water bearer moves through life assertively. Because Aquarius enjoys shocking others and making waves in the agenda of The Man, you might feel like the best solutions now are those which are radical or unorthodox; the inner rebel is chomping at the bit, and s/he wants to be noticed. However, you can see how this can easily be taken to the extreme. Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius will encourage us to thoroughly examine what and how we know what we think we know. This transit will connect you directly to the source of your own organic brilliance and inner wisdom.

Mercury Rx in Aquarius is the ultimate opportunity to harness the magic of liberation and open-mindedness. Now is the time to break out of mindsets that have calcified over time and no longer serve you. In particular, Mercury Rx in Aquarius directs our attention toward beliefs rooted in false knowledge, unoriginal ideas and aspects of life that have become too emotionally charged.

Aquarius is a mover and a shaker. This transit may help you discover a new level of creativity/ingenuity that you did not even know existed. One word that comes to mind when I think of Mercury Rx is change: there is simply no escaping! Mercury Rx in Aquarius will allow you to make changes in your life that you did not think possible, all the while remaining comfortably detached, unconcerned with how or when things will happen. This transit may (re)connect you with a group or club, as the water bearer is quite the social butterfly. From astrologer Sherene Schostak:

On the fun side, old friends and tribe members could suddenly reappear in your life after a long absence. If they do, they’re probably returning to help you redefine your future mission statement. This is also a time when we’re reflecting upon where we belong in the greater whole. If we don’t feel like we’ve found “our people” as in kindred souls with similar values and goals, this is a chance to really reflect on what’s out of alignment or what we need to do to find our crew.

Visualize a gale force wind blowing through your life, rearranging and readjusting all that needs attention. Mercury Rx in Aquarius is bold, vivacious and energized. Unlike the Mercury Retrograde period in Scorpio last October, this transit will probably not be very emotionally taxing. Now we sweep away our resistance to becoming that which we already are. All of the projects and goals and ideas dancing in your psyche are just waiting to burst forth in an explosion of color and heat.

Other possibilities for this transit: exploring fringe/alternative activities; cultivating faith in humanity; connecting to anything and everything outside the Self - connecting to the Oneness which gives perfect meaning to each and every individual. Like many other astrologers, I fear that I have fallen into the trap of over dramatizing this transit. With the power of the mind, we can and will have a successful Mercury Retrograde.

I’m personally very excited about this transit. Time to clear the cobwebs and get funky. To find your Mercury sign and whether he was direct or retrograde at the time of your birth, click here. It is interesting to note that, if you were indeed born with Mercury Rx, you may not notice the effects above as strongly, if at all. More to come on natal Mercury Rx!
