A Beginner’s Guide to Poker Terms

Poker is a game of skill that requires a keen eye, bucket of confidence, and a well-developed strategy. It also helps to know the lingo to avoid confusing your opponents. To help you get started, we’ve put together a comprehensive list of poker terms that will have you talking the talk in no time.

Ante

The small bet players are required to place before a hand is dealt. An ante adds value to the pot right off the bat, and allows players to act before their opponent has even seen their cards.

Bluffing

The act of putting your opponent on a bad hand and attempting to win the pot by betting against them. When done correctly, bluffing can be an extremely effective way to win a hand.

Call

To call means to place into the pot the amount needed to match the last bet made for that particular betting round. For example, if the player to your right raised $10, you would need to say “call” in order to stay in the hand.

Nuts

A hand that consists of pocket cards of the same suit and hits additional cards on the flop, turn, and river to make a straight or flush. This is a very strong hand and is usually the best you can have at any given point in the game.
