How BigQuery Slots Work

A slot is a gap in a structure that can be filled. The word is derived from the Latin for “hole.” There are many different types of slots, each with their own set of rules and payout structures. Understanding how these work can help you maximize your chances of winning.

A modern slot machine is a simple device that accepts currency and pays out when symbols match in a winning combination on an active pay line. Although there are many variations, including machines that mimic spinning reels on a video screen and those that use cards rather than coins, all slot games are based on random number generation. Each time you press the spin button, a computer generates a unique set of numbers every millisecond. If these match a payline you have bet on, you win. If not, you lose.

Each query in BigQuery has its own dedicated pool of slots. Whenever a query’s capacity demands change, BigQuery automatically re-evaluates the availability of slots across executing queries and makes them available or allocates them to other jobs, if necessary. Queries can also be gracefully paused, resumed, and queued up to ensure that they always receive a fair share of slots. If a job is unable to acquire enough slots, the system borrows from other jobs to prevent delays. Any excess slots are not billed to the query. When the job is finished, the extra slots are re-allocated to other jobs.
