Planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a “backwards” functioning of the planetary roles. Mercury turns retrograde approximately three times a year, more frequently than any other planet. Brain yummies from EarthSky:

On Mercury, for example, the Sun sometimes moves in retrograde! As the planet speeds through its closest approach with the sun, its orbital speed overtakes its rotational speed. An astronaut on the surface would see the sun partially rise, then dip back below the horizon, then rise again before resuming its east-to-west trek across the sky. Once a year, Mercury gets two sunrises on the same day!

Mercury is: communication, the mind, travel, expression, technology. These realms are particularly affected during Mercury Retrograde. Expect delays, cancellations and sudden changes to travel/social plans; technological failures, especially cell phones, laptops or automobiles; communication breakdown; disorganization; confusion; impaired decision-making; mysterious disappearances or lost/stolen items; malfunctioning of anything and everything! I do not recommend major purchases or signing important (read: any) contracts/documents. This is not a good time for long-distance travel, life-altering commitments or investments. In a nutshell: *hands off new endeavors.*

We last experienced Mercury Retrograde in Sagittarius about one year ago, but only for a few days from January 4 – 8. Mercury rewinds in Sagittarius once more. He first enters the constellation on November 5, and we will begin to feel the effects of the retrograde as early as November 15. Mercury will then continue to linger in Sagittarius until January 10, 2018. Things should start to feel back to normal around this time.

Retrograde periods return to that which has been ignored, forgotten or discarded, and here we return to Truth. Anything left unsaid, say it here. If a conversation needs to continue or be expounded upon, here’s your chance. Mercury in Sagittarius is blunt and honest. The centaur worships Truth because he thrives on change and movement. What better way to invite change than by communicating high on veracity? Mercury in Sagittarius is strictly genuine and the first to rise above pettiness. For the sake of uninterruptedness, Sagittarius waits until a proper window opens for straight-talk. The archer does not dwell or hold grudges but releases all in the heat of the moment.

What we express during Mercury Retrograde in Sag not novel. We have known deep within for awhile. This is acknowledgement, acceptance. Sagittarius shines Truth on these nodules when they fall dormant. He is a cathartic force, extracting thoughts and words via the throat chakra, hauling them out into the light. Once in the light, we see that this is where they belong. Hopefully this is habit-forming, or that’s the idea. Zodiac archetypes are not just house guests who flit about and leave no trace. Let the archer make an impression upon your portal of communication – let Truth merge with your neck, let it wind into the wind pipe, let it glow.

We don’t have a choice whether to speak or remain silent – we have to clear the air. It’s up to you, how you will react. As surely as the sun, Truth rises. Remember that Sagittarius is a force of JOY and there is nothing to fear. He is here to help, to ease communication, to keep vibrations high. Relax into this knowing. Physical exercise (as always) is a must. Refine the tongue with brisk walks and short meditations.
