In total, Mercury is in Taurus from Mar 31 – June 6. The retrograde period occurs first in Taurus from April 9 – 20, then continues in Aries until May 3.
Planets in retrograde are not actually spinning backwards – it is entirely an optical illusion as seen from Earth. Backwards motion appears to happen when Earth passes slower moving planets in the outer solar system. In astrology, this illusion manifests as a “backwards” functioning of the planetary roles. Mercury will not be retrograde for the entire duration of the Taurus transit, but for 11 days from April 9 – 20. Mercury Retrograde then continues in the constellation of Aries, finally turning direct on May 3. Mercury returns to Taurus for a final time from May 15 – June 6.
Mercury turns retrograde approximately three times a year, more frequently than any other planet. Brain yummies from EarthSky:
On Mercury, for example, the Sun sometimes moves in retrograde! As the planet speeds through its closest approach with the sun, its orbital speed overtakes its rotational speed. An astronaut on the surface would see the sun partially rise, then dip back below the horizon, then rise again before resuming its east-to-west trek across the sky. Once a year, Mercury gets two sunrises on the same day!
Mercury is: communication, the mind, travel, expression, technology. As you have likely noticed, these realms are particularly affected during Mercury Retrograde. Think delays, cancellations and sudden changes to travel/social plans; technological failures, especially cell phones, laptops or automobiles; communication breakdown; disorganization; confusion; impaired decision-making; mysterious disappearances or lost/stolen items; malfunctioning of anything and everything! I do not recommend major purchases or signing important (read: any) contracts/documents. This is not a good time for long-distance travel, life-altering commitments or investments. In a nutshell: no new endeavors.
Bed the tongue in the gardens of Taurus. The bull is serious and self-assured. Communication here is succinct and matter-of-fact, betraying any lack of confidence the speaker might have. Taurus is not interested in small talk because she regards it as superfluous, meaningless, counter to her innate pragmatism. The bull lives in the basics. When in doubt, keep it simple.
We should not feel guilty for indulging in two behaviors which form the underpinning of Mercury in Taurus’ nature: forthright speech and living slowly. It is easy to feel restless and cagey at this time. See just how slowly you can move, and just how silently.
Retrograde periods return to lessons which have been ignored or forgotten, and this time it’s all about eliminating what is not essential. At her best, the bull is direct and assertive, communicating with conviction. Be wary: Mercury Retrograde in Taurus can make some humans VERY argumentative. Those mired in ignorance do not graciously extend the bull’s natural patience to others, but are rather intransigent and unforgiving.
Taurus is well equipped to guide us through arduous and elaborate missions. However, some are not be able to see beyond external reality, so Taurus teaches these sleepy ones how to ground in the unknown. We must reach for complexity even as we sustain and maintain daily life in earthen fashion. Mercury Retrograde in Taurus will make these folks struggling with spirituality rather uncomfortable. As a result, they may choose not to address lurking issues.
My advice, during any retrograde period, but especially this one, is to root in one place and just be there. Sit and meditate. Even if we want to travel and be active, I don’t think Taurus will let us. She is a static creature and demands stillness. Sometimes stillness feels like stagnancy but it is not! Go outside more and break up your routine!
I know that Mercury Retrograde always feels interminable, and in Taurus it is soooo slowwwwwwwwww, but this glacial pace allows us to take our time. It’s all about patience baby ~ Although it won’t appear to happen quickly (or at all), resolution/completion is rising from deep within the earth. May you neither seek nor desire, but rather sink into the wildflowers with a happy sigh.
