Happy full moon! Happy lunar eclipse! The June full moon is called the Strawberry Moon as it coincides with berry ripening season. In Europe, it is sometimes called the Rose Moon. Golden strawberries of cosmic wisdom ripen in honey crystal caves, dropping softly into the basket of your being…
The moon will rise at sunset, peak at midnight and set at sunrise all over the world, no matter your time zone. Eclipses can be full or partial. The earth’s shadow consists of two parts: the shadow cast directly behind the earth is called the umbra, and the fainter, fan-like shadow surrounding the umbra is the penumbra. This full moon is a partial (or penumbral) eclipse – in fact, we won’t have another total lunar eclipse until next year in May 2021. Moon gazers in Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe will have the best view.
The sun and moon hover in opposition between Gemini and Sagittarius: the axis of seekers and ramblers. This lunar eclipse brings movement, adventure, teaching, and learning. We are all teachers and students. What are you here to teach? What are you here to learn? The centaur archer sends bow after fiery bow into the darkness of uncertainty. Sagittarian fire energy is so expressive and boisterous that we are taken up, out, toward the light and one another, drawn into communion with our neighbors. It is time to laugh and reconnect. It is also time to dance on down the mountain path. It is time to sing out and loosen the body.
At the same time…I don’t want to gloss over Sagittarius’ astonishing power of illumination and truth and just how much it can rock our reality. Sagittarius is incredibly raw and candid. Under this influence, it is impossible to hide or pretend. There are no secrets to keep. Sagittarius opens up the throat chakra so wide that those who live with a Sagittarius know that one of their signature personality traits is saying the first thing that comes to mind without thinking. This lunar eclipse is similarly a force of exposure, with revelations rolling in like fire, if not rage.
At this full moon last year, I got really really sick. At the same time, several thousand miles away, a loved one was betraying my trust. My body picked up on this energetic disconnect immediately – the body doesn’t lie! Though I didn’t find out the truth of the situation until after the full moon, it was clear to me that the moon was trying to illuminate the situation anyway through my health.
This lunar eclipse looks pretty contentious, to be honest. For starters, the moon forms a nearly exact square to Mars in Pisces. At the same time, the moon opposes Venus Retrograde in Gemini. Share, uplift, revitalize, expand – this is still the centaur’s calling. Follow him into the forest, into the joyful vortex. On this full moon I have twice made a pilgrimage to Mt Shasta, California. Mt Shasta is a special place, an enormous peak who collects travelers like morning dew at the base of her majesty. We don’t know what will happen next, and that includes all the beauty and pleasant surprises. If the Lunar Eclipse in Sagittarius is here to teach us anything, it is that we have no reason to fear uncertainty. Fan the flames with Sagittarius Yoga. In meditation, focus on the creative sacral chakra. To find your personal moon sign, click here.
