At the last quarter, the moon rises at midnight, peaks at dawn and sets at noon – no matter your time zone. At this station, the defiant moon in Aquarius squares the earthy Taurus sun. The moon initially moves into Aquarius on May 12, two days before the quarter moon. Luna will then transition to Pisces the same day of the quarter moon. This is the last moon phase of the Taurus sun cycle.
Quarter moons are crossroads. Last quarter moons clear the way for the new moon / new lunar cycle. This phase prepares us for the New Moon in Gemini on May 22.
Aquarius is the zodiac’s eccentric psychonaut. He rules community, as well as circulation of people and ideas. The water bearer is an exuberant, excitable archetype who loves to dance and stay up late into the night. And now a wild Aquarian festival is brewing in the sky. Taurus welcomes these quirky traveler sprites and spirits into her home, her garden, her patch of earth. She wraps us in deep layers of comfort and stability. And then Aquarius comes in to upend this whole earthen notion of safety and security. His message: stay adaptable and open-minded.
Adaptation is essential whenever Aquarius billows in through the window, chanting prophecies from the future. At this moon phase, nothing pans out the way we think it will. This is neither good nor bad, it just is. Aquarius reminds us again and again that the Universe does not care about our expectations. How do you react when everything changes? This is what we get to examine now.
The Last Quarter Moon in Aquarius forces us to get out of our comfort zones, or accept a sudden change of plans – and we really don’t have a choice. Usually Aquarian events involve travel, but it is ultimately about people and how we move and shift and come together, or not. Nothing about Aquarius is mundane or quiet. It is time to journey beyond what we know. And yet there lies Taurus, chewing slowly in the sun, inhaling flowery aromas. She says, remember how delicious it is to commune with others beneath the moonlight on a warm spring evening? Amongst the leaves and fruits of Taurus’ green green garden, we find turquoise Aquarian crystals opening to other dimensions. And so we nourish two needs at once: the need to be grounded (Taurus) and the need to expand beyond the known (Aquarius). On special evenings we do both, stamping our feet to a rhythm older than time.
This quarter moon will form a friendly trine to Venus Retrograde in Gemini, which begins two days earlier on May 12 (when the moon initially moves into Aquarius). This is a very harmonious, cooperative influence – so beneficial for our relationships. I also want to mention that Jupiter Retrograde in Capricorn will begin about 30 minutes after this quarter moon comes exact. And then, at the very end of the day, the Taurus sun trines Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn. I have a really good feeling about this aspect, and this quarter moon in general, despite all of the cryptic warnings I’m giving. The trine to Pluto makes us feel confident and powerful, especially when it comes to intimacy. This will be a very productive day in a psychological/spiritual sense <3
But don’t forget: expect the unexpected. We’re on the road to find out, as Cat Stevens sings. No one knows what will happen next! There is always something new, something unforeseen, something just around the bend. Free your mind with Aquarius Yoga. In meditation, focus on the root chakra.
