Sunday, June 9 at 11.00pm PST
The Sun in Gemini squares the moon in Virgo. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight all over the world, no matter your time zone. The moon is waxing, gathering momentum for fullness. The moon enters Virgo on June 8 (one day before the quarter moon), hangs here until June 11, then moves on to Libra for the next 60-hour round, then Scorpio, and so on and so forth. The moon completes her revolution around the earth in 29 days, but since the earth is also moving around the sun, the moon completes her revolution through the zodiac in just 27.33 days. On June 15 the moon enters Sagittarius, marking the beginning of the full moon.
Our eyes are freshly cleared by the new moon – now what? At the first quarter, we address precisely this question of now what, where to go, what to do? Quarter moons prompt definitive change. They represent a turning point or moment of truth.
Both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by the planet Mercury. The purpose of this first quarter moon is examination of communication and mental acuity (Gemini) to improve work and health (Virgo). Some examples: quality of relations with co-workers; mindset towards exercise and nutrition.
Gemini and Virgo both have exceptionally active minds. Gemini lives in the mercurial creative flow – mind, voice and arms connected as one – prolific manifestation of the inner prism’s sights and sounds. Virgo demands responsibility and discipline; Gemini demands absolute freedom to change anything and everything. Virgo embodies ruthless practicality. She helps Gemini get out of his mind and back to his hands, back to the landscape.
Virgo turns her turmoil inward with dizzying anxiety and indiscrete perfectionism. With the moon here, stewing in the pit of the stomach, and the sun racing through the clouds with the wind spirits, we’ll careen through space faster and brighter than ever. Allow things to take their course. It’s all happening in hyperdrive so we don’t need to do anything to expedite the process. A time to be alert, but not controlling. Change is coming.
The desire to wander, to float nowhere in particular – this will be confronted by an equally powerful desire for work and routine. The key to this quarter moon is presence. Be in your body, behind your eyes. Though it is tempting to fly away from everyone and everything at the first twinge of doubt – tuck your wings, my friend. Stay here.
You may be suddenly inundated with work at this quarter moon. Station yourself out in the sun. Plant your seeds, watch those little green babies grow taller every day. Our hands and body will respond like a lover to work. Give the mind a place to roam, an avenue of psychic travel. Through our moving fingertips, thoughts run like an electric current, into the plant cells, into the soil, into the air, and the mind becomes clear enough to see through. Flowers emerge from tangles of leaves, revealing themselves with slow confidence, like a sensuous evening unfolding, their intoxicating aroma wrapped thickly in warm spring air.
Ok this quarter moon looks pretty intense – for starters, the moon squares both Neptune and Jupiter Retrograde in Sagittarius. However, there will also be a perfect trine to Saturn Retrograde in Capricorn, and that’s really what’s going to hold us down. It is important to keep expectations realistic. This will be a rather serious day, as Saturn’s influence brings even more emphasis to work and structure. Reach out to your mentors and/or prepare to meet a new one. Something monumental is coming on the work/long-term goal front. This is not a good day to travel – ground down and stay in one place. With Jupiter and Neptune involved with hard angles, we are likely to feel disappointed (if expectations are too high). Ask your elders for advice. A great day for lists, vision boards or any kind of planning/organization.
