The effervescent Gemini sun squares the bustling moon in Virgo. This first quarter moon follows the sparkly New Moon in Gemini. First quarter phases clarify our plans. When mutable constellations work together, it is time to bring in more flexibility and adaptability. The first quarter moon rises at noon, peaks at dusk and sets at midnight, no matter your time zone. Luna initially enters Virgo early on May 29 and will stay here through May 31, then move on to Libra for the next few days. The moon completes her revolution around the earth in 29 days, but since the earth is also moving around the sun, the moon completes her revolution through the zodiac in just 27.33 days. The moon is waxing, gathering momentum for the full moon. On June 4 she transitions from Scorpio to Sagittarius for the Strawberry Full Moon Lunar Eclipse!
Both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Mercury. The purpose of this first quarter moon is sharpening mental acuity (Gemini) in order to improve results with work/school/health (Virgo). Something we all need, right? For me this quarter moon coincides with final exams for school. This is a time when we really lean into the logic brain to guide our decision-making. Gemini also lives in the creative flow – mind, voice and arms connected, prolific manifestation of inner sights and sounds. Mercurial activities like reading, writing, conversing, and sharing ideas will all increase. When Gemini and Virgo fuse, the mind, tongue, and body meld with our work.
Where Virgo craves responsibility and discipline, Gemini craves the freedom to change anything and everything. Gemini and Virgo both have exceptionally active minds. The Virgo moon turns her turmoil inward with dizzying anxiety and indiscrete perfectionism. With Luna here, stewing in the pit of the stomach, and the Gemini sun racing through the clouds with the wind spirits, we are careening through space faster and brighter than ever. Change is unfolding in hyperdrive. We can’t do anything to alter or expedite the process. This is simply a time to be alert, eyes on the horizon.
We will be inundated with work at this quarter moon. So what do we do? Plant our proverbial seeds and watch those little green babies grow taller every day. Our hands and body respond like a lover to work. We give the mind a place to roam, an avenue of psychic travel. Through our moving fingertips, thoughts run like an electric current, into plant cells, into the soil, into the air, and the mind becomes clear enough to see through. Flowers emerge from tangles of leaves, revealing themselves with slow confidence, like a sensuous evening unfolding, intoxicating aromas soaking the warm spring air.
The quarter moon forms a electrifying trine to Uranus in Taurus. This aspect is a strong indicator that we are still utilizing technology to facilitate most of our interactions, especially when it comes to work and school. Uranus is a social and inherently exciting influence. The desire to break free, to float above the earth – this will be confronted by an equally powerful desire for work and routine. The key to this quarter moon is presence. Stay in your body, behind your eyes. Though you may feel like flying away – stay here, my friend. I suggest twisting yoga poses to calm the nervous system, ruled by Virgo. In meditation, focus on the throat chakra (Mercury center). Stay calm and rooted with Virgo Yoga.
