The Sun in Gemini squares the moon in Virgo. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight. Quarter moons are provocative as they prompt definitive change. They represent a turning point or moment of truth.
Both Gemini and Virgo are ruled by the planet Mercury. The purpose of this first quarter moon is examination (Mercury) of our communication and mental processes (Gemini) to improve work or health-related sectors of life (Virgo). Some examples: quality of relationships with friends/co-workers; mindset towards exercise and nutrition.
Virgo is not flawless. She turns her turmoil inward. Virgo dazzles with dizzying anxiety and indiscrete perfectionism. With the moon here, stewing in the pit of the stomach, and the sun racing between the clouds with the wind spirits, we’ll careen through space faster and brighter than ever. Allow things to take their course. It’s all happening in hyperdrive so we don’t need to do anything to expedite the unfolding. A time to be alert, but not controlling. When change comes along and you can’t stop thinking – don’t tense up, come back to the body.
Both Gemini and Virgo have a habit of getting lost in the mind. Gemini lives in the mercurial creative flow – mind, voice and arms connected as one – prolific manifestation of the inner prism’s sights and sounds. Gemini is the sign of twins and duality. He can hold two seemingly contradictory opinions/beliefs simultaneously. This works pretty well until he crumples beneath the mounting pressure inside the brain. Virgo exercises a ruthless practicality that the twins often lack. She returns to the surface again and again. Virgo demands responsibility and discipline; Gemini demands absolute freedom to change anything and everything. Virgo is Gemini’s dutiful mother, patching the rippling fabric of spacetime. Virgo helps the twins get out of the mind and back to the hands which work and mend, back to the landscape.
Our desire to wander, roam, travel, dillydally – this almost feels like a duty while the pull towards work and routine will speak to the heart. The key to the First Quarter in Virgo: presence. Resist the urge to sink below, stay behind your eyes. We may fly away from everyone and everything at the first twinge of doubt. Our greatest task and challenge is to stay and confront – tuck your wings, my friend.
At this quarter moon last year my travel companion asked if we could squeeze a popular national park into our journey. I was road weary but agreed to the detour. We zipped through the entire crowded park in two days. Like clockwork I fell sick, and I was pretty grumbly about the whole thing too. If we ignore constellational energies that rule fast-paced systems in the body, as do Gemini and Virgo, we strain them beyond capacity and the body pays. Rest if this is what your body requires. Good health, mental and physical, is paramount!
The most prominent aspect of this quarter moon is an opposition to Neptune, Goddess of Pisces. (Other less noteworthy aspects include two trines, one with Mercury in Taurus and the other with Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn.) Any interaction with Neptune promotes a dreamlike quality. Life will feel so good, and though we may even be aware that it is too good to be true, we will go along with the euphoric illusions anyway. It’s all about flow. Do not plan anything but rest and reflection. Creative work is always suggested. No need to worry about miscommunication or fuzzy brain, this quarter moon will be exceptionally clearheaded. This one sparks our will power to clear the old and make way for the new, like flowers growing from a tangle of weeds, a fresh start, a gleam of insight; problems dissolve to reveal solid, transformative plans.
