First Quarter Moon in Scorpio ☽ July 30, 2017

Sunday, July 30 at 8.23am EST

The Sun in Leo squares the moon in Scorpio. The moon will rise at noon, peak at dusk and set at midnight. Quarter moons prompt definitive change. They represent a turning point or moment of truth.

Here we are on the lion path: an intoxicating encounter with Scorpio. The First Quarter in Scorpio addresses trust issues as well as power and control struggles. This moon phase is usually very emotionally volatile. We may be inclined to fight and sting ourselves. The scorpion can be a vicious, self-loathing creature with an acid tongue, so for the love of Buddha, keep that poison in check, especially if it’s directed inward. Paradoxically and unintentionally, we often dig deeper into the ego as a reaction to its arrival, as we do with self-loathing thoughts, which strengthen the ego. Self-loathing is a product of ego, though we tend to think of it in different terms.

At this quarter moon last year, a gigantic thunderstorm rolled in from every corner of the mountain valley where my partner and I camped. Lightning and earth-shattering thunder gripped the shelter of our car as we conversed in whispers about the afterlife. Cloaked in blankets and black clouds punctuated by flashes and silent shrieks, a powerful emotion gripped the root of my being, something macabre, insane, petrifying. A few days later, the moon poked through to Sagittarius, and the sunshine washed my tears, and my lungs opened once more to summer’s fire.

Together, Scorpio and Leo render transformation. They have little in common besides their doggedly fixed nature. Leo is the self-centered prince of the zodiac, and Scorpio the brooding introvert with dwindling faith in humanity.

We must consciously choose to walk out of the shadow and into the light at this juncture. Scorpio is not naturally lighthearted. She comes from the Underworld. Scorpio knows that powerful demons can materialize and wreak havoc at any moment. She fears little except being powerless, and the art she masters is that of letting go.

Leo is ruled by the Sun, the center of our solar system, and Scorpio by Pluto, the planet farthest from center. Imagine the Sun and Pluto stretching their arms over the vast cosmic distance between, intertwining in some remote asteroid belt. Within you there is an equally vast distance which must be overcome. The center of centers reaches out to the extremes. This is what we must collate and reconcile.

We are all undergoing constant metamorphosis. What we want and what we receive may appear to be different, but in actuality they are not. The physical mind is not designed to understand this. Only the higher mind can.

A high vibration relationship to the lion and scorpion looks something like this: self-confidence (Leo) and renewal through healing (Scorpio). What you feel is not an illusion, and berating yourself, telling yourself that your worries are insignificant or fabricated, this will not dissolve them. Do not dismiss your pain, but invite it in, hold it, love it until it bursts into tiny, beautiful shards. Pick through the shards and tears and pangs and you will find that they are all part of one massive cosmic healing mission.

Connect, open your throat chakra; resist the urge to dwell; embrace uncertainty; trust in the unseen. It is neither our privilege nor our burden to know what comes next. Assume nothing! May your weaknesses become kindling for self-realization!
